Current Conditions at 2 p.m. EST this Friday afternoon: Not as windy but still on the cold side under a partly sunny sky. Fine particle pollution (PM2.5) concentrations are in the good range across the area. Mid-moderate PM2.5 is likely Saturday out ahead of a cold front which produces a bit of snow Saturday night followed by an Arctic blast Sunday and Monday. Temperatures should finally moderate by Wednesday as the flow aloft becomes westerly. Here are the forecast details: *** Saturday’s forecast: Mostly cloudy Saturday with light winds early in the day elevating PM2.5 concentrations. Some reduction in PM2.5 will occur during the afternoon with west-southwest flow increasing to around 8 mph. Overall averages for the day will end up in the middle moderate range. A cold front approaching brings a bit of snow Saturday night, accumulating a fresh coating to an inch. *** Sunday’s forecast: Windy and rather cold Sunday with strong mixing lowering PM2.5 well down in the good range. Highs will only reach the middle to upper 20s with wind chills in the teens. Any sunshine will do little to warm the air. *** Monday’s forecast: Clouds and some sunshine and a little less windy Monday, but still a cold afternoon with highs peaking around 30. PM2.5 concentration should remain in the good range. *** Extended forecast: A warming trend is foreseen by Wednesday as the upper level flow turns westerly and shuts off the Arctic intrusions. With the influx of warmer air will come increasing humidity which typically acts to raise PM2.5 concentrations.
