Current Conditions: At 2 p.m. EST this Friday afternoon, winds remain gusty out of the northwest. Ample mixing in the lower atmosphere is keeping fine particle pollution (PM2.5) concentrations low. PM2.5 is expected to increase over the weekend with parts of the area reaching into the moderate range as surface flow weakens. Seasonably cold over the weekend into Monday, then turning blustery and rather cold Tuesday into Wednesday. Here are the forecast details: *** Saturday’s forecast: A bit of snow Saturday morning, then turning out mostly cloudy the remainder of the day. PM2.5 will reach the low moderate threshold in parts of the area, with better air quality coming during the afternoon. The mercury will top out in the middle 30s. *** Sunday’s forecast: Light surface winds and less dispersion will allow PM2.5 averages to remain in the moderate range Sunday. With more sunshine, temperatures will reach the upper 30s. *** Monday’s forecast: Times of clouds and sunshine Monday. A westerly breeze will not be enough to keep air quality out of the moderate range. A cold front approaches Monday night with little to no precipitation. *** Extended forecast: Turning blustery and colder Tuesday and Wednesday behind the front as northwest winds transport in a fresh round of Canadian air with temperatures not getting above the freezing mark and wind chills in the teens. The only upside to the long range forecast is that air quality will be good.---McAuliffe
