Current Conditions: ***A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from 4 p.m. EST Thursday to 4 p.m. EST Friday** At 2 p.m. EST this Wednesday afternoon, skies were mostly cloudy with temperatures reaching the middle 50s. Light and limited mixing with higher relative humidity has allowed fine particle (PM2.5) concentrations to remain in the moderate range. A strong cold front is pushing through the Ohio valley and will pass through the area tonight with much needed rainfall. Colder air will then sweep in behind the front and remain with us through the weekend, with the first accumulating snow of the season late Thursday into Friday. Here are the forecast details: *** Thursday’s forecast: Breezy and colder Thursday with mostly cloudy skies with periods of rain, mixing with and turning to snow Thursday night. High temperatures will remain around 40 degrees. Brisk surface winds should allow for lower levels of particle pollution. *** Extended forecast: Low pressure is expected to rotate southward into Pennsylvania Friday with snow mixing with and turning to rain in the afternoon. The potential is there for significant snows, mainly at elevations over 1,500 feet. Highs Friday will struggle in the middle and upper 30s. Enough mixing along with the precipitation should keep air quality good. Breezy and chilly Saturday with more clouds than sun and a rain shower, then high pressure builds in Sunday, allowing for increasing sunshine. The next chance for rain is expected late Monday or Monday night. Good air quality will continue over the weekend.---McAuliffe
