Current Conditions: At 2 p.m. EDT this Friday afternoon, skies were mostly cloudy as a cold front is stalled out well to our south. So far, fine particle (PM2.5) concentrations remain in the good range. With light southeast winds expected Saturday, mixing will be reduced. Therefore PM2.5 values will rise a bit. A cold frontal passage Sunday is expected to lower PM2.5 levels further late Sunday into the early part of next week, but a drop in temperatures will also occur. Here are the forecast details: *** Saturday’s forecast: Skies will continue mostly cloudy Saturday with a period of two of rain in the morning and a shower or two during the afternoon. Weak southeasterly surface flow may hinder mixing, so parts of the area may see PM2.5 levels rise, but only to the upper good range. *** Sunday’s forecast: A cold front coming through Sunday will bring additional rainy periods. Winds shifting into the northwest should bring PM2.5 further down inside the good range. Additional light rain possibly mixing with wet snow is possible Sunday night as the front gets hung up for a time. *** Monday’s forecast: Monday starts off with clouds and a rain or snow shower, then the sun returns with a chilly northwest breeze and good air quality. *** Extended forecast: A secondary cold front passing through Monday night with a snow shower will send a reinforcing shot of unseasonably cold air into the region Tuesday, and Tuesday will end up being the coldest day of the forecast period, with highs perhaps remaining in the upper 30s. High pressure brings sunshine and slightly milder air in Wednesday, then the next low pressure system brings back the chance for showers Thursday. Air quality Tuesday through Thursday will remain in the good range.---McAuliffe
