Daily Air Quality Forecast for Lake Dalecarlia, Indiana

Northwest Air Quality Region Forecast for Today: October 4, 2024 Ozone: Good PM2.5 : Good Weather Forecast Discussion Surface high pressure is tracking across the Great Lakes this morning and will result in another mostly sunny day after a brief shower chance this morning as a weak cold front slides past the area. Shower activity will be limited. The high will shift east of the area on Saturday, with south-southeast winds becoming breezy in response to a tightening pressure gradient ahead of another deep mid-level trough transiting the northern Plains and upper Midwest. Temperatures on Saturday should rise quickly with warm air advection in play. By Saturday evening, a low will begin to move east across southern Canada and drag a warm front across the region initially on Saturday evening which is quickly trailed by a cold front. Current forecasts have the fronts past the forecast area by sometime on Sunday with surface high pressure taking over. With the 500 mb jets zonal pattern breaking today with the weak shortwaves passage things get more active again. We will see brief upper-level riding on Saturday before a more powerful trough and its associated upper-level low moves in Sunday and will place us in an northwesterly flow aloft into Monday. Temperatures at 850 mb surge with the warm fronts passage late Saturday to near 19 degrees C as strong warm air advection kicks in for a few hours ahead of the cold front. With the passage of the cold front early Sunday morning, those temperatures fall quickly. Saturday will be sunny, with a high near 78. South southeast wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Sunday expecting sunny skies, with a high near 74. West northwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Monday will be sunny, with a high near 64. Winds out of the northwest. Air Quality model analysis and decision? Ozone: A review of the NOAA 06Z BC has moderate for a few hours over the weekend but the general trend is toward good ozone wise. I cannot rule out some scattered moderates on Saturday considering we saw some yesterday. In general, with a tight pressure gradient tomorrow and above average temperatures I feel that we will struggle to reach moderate levels for a solid 8 hours. Sunday and Monday should stay in the good range. Next up, the GA Tech has a mix of good and moderate on Saturday with the GEM-MACH showing a surge of moderate ozone on Saturday in the warm sector ahead of the cold front as well. Bottom line is moderate is possible tomorrow with goods after that. Fine Particulate: The NOAA 03Z surface smoke forecast has a surge of light smoke getting pulled in between the warm and cold fronts on Saturday. Levels are in the single digits but it’s something worth mentioning. Column integrated levels are in the low moderate range. Another consideration is we are in harvesting season across the region and despite recent rains most areas are still rather dry so dust may contribute to overall fine particulate matter levels as well. With these factors combined it’s obvious that moderates are possible on Saturday with levels falling off with the passage of the cold front. The FireWork model has some very light surface smoke moving north from Arkansas on Saturday. This mornings NOAA 06Z BC run has moderate on Saturday and Sunday with goods on Monday for fine particulate. Finally, the GA Tech 12km is USG today and high moderate on Saturday-this model runs with a high bias. Overall, expecting moderate on Sat/Sun and good on Monday.
