Air Quality Index for Indiana

The highest AQ index in Indiana (as of 10:00 EDT) is currently the Lafayette area. Particle Pollution (PM2.5) is measuring at 52 (Moderate). This means air quality is acceptable. However, there may be a risk for some people, particularly those who are unusually sensitive to air pollution.

Over the next few days, the highest Ozone (OZONE) will be in the Evansville area. It is forecasted to be Moderate, meaning air quality is acceptable. However, there may be a risk for some people, particularly those who are unusually sensitive to air pollution.

Values for ozone were on the high-end of moderate for the SE region on Thursday with a mix of good and lower end moderate for the rest of the southern region. Ozone values for the week were good besides that on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Values for PM2.5 were good Tuesday through Thursday. We are continuing a period of mostly quiet conditions. As of 12z Friday, a high pressure system sits over northern Indiana pulling in northerly flow. High pressure is expected to persist for majority of this forecast period. The exception being for SW Indiana, when a surface front has the potential to bring slight chances of showers later Friday. Friday high temperatures are expected to be in the low to mid-80's with partly to mostly sunny conditions. Winds are expected to stay light from the NE/E. Saturday and Sunday are expected to be partly sunny with high temperatures in the upper 70's to low 80's. Winds are once again forecast to be light from the NE/E. Monday is forecast to be mostly sunny with temperatures once again upper 70's to low 80's with light northerly winds. A concern for this forecast period is models did not accurately grasp the ozone levels yesterday. For example, the NOAA BC model predicted ozone to peak around 40-50 ppb 8-hr averages for the SE when values reached 70 ppb for the 8 hour max average. There were light NNE winds, mostly sunny conditions, and temperatures in the mid to upper 80's. With this pattern similar for this forecast period, this will be something to keep in mind. The NOAA 06Z BC model for ozone predicts good ozone Friday through Monday and the Canadian forecasts moderate levels Friday and Saturday with a mix of good and moderate beyond that. Given how the NOAA and NOAA BC model underpredicted ozone yesterday, and we have close to identical conditions for this forecast period; I am going with moderate levels for SE Indiana where the highest levels were observed and a mix of good and moderate for SW Indiana. The NOAA 06Z BC model for PM2.5 forecasts a mix of good and moderate for the entire forecast period. The Canadian model for PM2.5 forecasts entirely good levels Friday through Monday. Given the low wind speeds, shallow mixing heights, and stagnant air mass, I think high end good to low end moderate PM is possible for this period. Mixing heights are forecast to be around 3,900 ft Friday, 3,700 ft. Saturday, and 3,300 ft. Sunday.
