Daily Air Quality Forecast for Crown Point, Indiana

Northwest Air Quality Region Forecast for Today: November 18, 2024 PM2.5 : Moderate Weather Forecast Discussion This week will be dominated by one word: wet. Expecting wet, cloudy, and breezy conditions though the end of the work week. In addition, we may see our first measurable snow late Wednesday night as well followed by below normal temperatures. Our first weather maker will be a strong mid-level short wave that will make its way across the Great Lakes region starting tomorrow which will merge with a series of Pacific-based waves through mid-week, ultimately developing into a broad upper-level 500 mb low that is expected to drift across the Great Lakes region mid to late week. The previously mentioned low will pull in a much colder airmass from a pool of arctic air over western Canada/Pacific Northwest once it moves east. This will set the stage for the coldest air of the season to filter across the area while also supporting the potential for the first snowflakes of the season Wednesday night into Thursday. Once this system exits, expect a drop in temperatures at the surface and at 850mb as cold air begins to pour in to end the work week. This set up could also produce some lake enhanced snow/rain showers when the fetch off the lake becomes northwesterly behind the exiting low. The resulting 500 mb pattern will be for the trough to set up across the northeast and ridging out west by Friday. Air Quality model analysis and decision  Fine Particulate: The NOAA 12Z BC run indicates moderates today and tomorrow then a drop in fine particulate values as the system approaches the region and begins to spread rain and maybe some snow into late week. Also, despite fires on both coasts we are not expecting any impacts through mid-week. Next, the GEM-MACH and FireWork models also lack any impacts from smoke as well which combined with the wet and active pattern this week leads me to forecast good AQI through Friday. I did decide to change today to moderate due to trends over the weekend and the NOAA 12Z BC being in that range as well with the best chance of values creeping up this morning then falling late in the day as mixing kicks into high gear ahead of the shortwave.
