Weather Analysis and Air Quality Forecasting Decisions: Fine Particulate: Latest surface analysis as of around 12Z this morning depicts a low pressure that has since exited the state and is moving southeastward. Last of the chances for light snow and flurries should stop by later this afternoon across the southern counties of the area. High pressure briefly builds back in before a clipper system moves through the area Saturday into Saturday night. This clipper system should bring measurable snow to the area, possibly 3 to 5 inches. After the clipper system moves out late Saturday night some of the coldest conditions of the season are expected this weekend with low temperatures approaching zero degrees or lower and wind chill values potentially down to -20 degrees on early Sunday morning. Sunday night expect even colder temperatures with clearing skies. Monday as the area gets into some return flow of southwest winds at 5 to 10 mph with gusts to 20 mph, highs will jump back up into the 20’s. Aside from Monday, winds will generally be west/northwest at 5 to 10 mph or less during the period. There are no fire weather concerns for the area nor the CONUS. Mixing heights this afternoon and tomorrow will be around 2200 ft and then 1800 ft for the rest of the period. The Canadian model wants to go with Good for the forecast period which am not biting on yet due to a newly formed small dense snowpack. The 06Z NOAA Model is going with Moderate today and tomorrow which makes sense. Also, the area has a little snowpack that is not going away anytime soon with such cold temperatures. So will go with Moderate for the period for today and Saturday for some possible elevated PM2.5 over the weekend. Other considerations may be folks burning due to temperatures being so cold out, and relatively low mixing heights for day and night. After Sunday, the winds pick up from the southwest at 5 to 10 mph and gust to 20 mph (and the area will have been well cleaned out by the clipper system) so going Good for the second half of the period.
