The air quality is great this morning, thanks to the widespread rain around southeastern Arizona yesterday. The Tucson International Airport logged in 0.71" of rainfall. The Davis-Monthan Air Force Base saw 0.47". Most areas around Tucson likely received around at least half an inch, with the mountains seeing more.
Looking ahead, today we'll be gearing up for round two. Another low-pressure wave will impact the state, but this time, out of the north. Rainfall will be less in amount and duration than yesterday, primarily focused ahead/along a cold front expected to pass through later this afternoon/evening. Additionally, today will be a much windier day, as winds increase ahead of the front. Fortunately, the recent rain will help to prevent dust from the stronger winds.
Then by tomorrow morning, residents will wake up to a much calmer--but colder--atmosphere. Lows are forecast at/near freezing, with more rural areas likely to be below freezing. PM2.5 (smoke) levels could also be slightly higher in the morning and possibly evening, because of lighter winds.
Saturday morning will also be cold, even slightly colder. But, temperatures will begin trending upwards thanks to higher pressure. Winds will also start to increase out of the east. Since these winds are expected to persist for several days, they will help to keep local PM2.5 levels dispersed in the mornings/evenings, Saturday through at least Monday.
Overall, recent and upcoming rain, along with winds, will help to keep PM10 and PM2.5 levels low.
