PM2.5 (smoke) will be the main pollutant to watch this weekend and beyond.
As overnight temperatures are cooler this time of year, and as people get into the holiday spirit during the Christmas season, residential fireplace and fire pit usage and other wood-burning activities will be on the increase. And, with stagnant overnight conditions, local PM2.5 levels will be able to build up.
For this forecast, PM2.5 is expected to be highest on Saturday and Sunday, mainly because of Saturday night and Sunday night being typical time windows for more wood-burning activities. However, one thing going in favor of lower PM2.5 will be light easterly (out of the east) winds Sunday evening and Monday morning. PM2.5 is still expected to be elevated, though.
As for PM10 (dust), PM10 will be primarily driven by weekday activities. Highest PM10 levels should also be limited to industrial areas south/southwest of the Phoenix metro area.
Check back on Monday morning for the next Phoenix Air Quality Forecast.
