Sunday, December 22: Winds will become calm to light southeasterly in the afternoon as surface high pressure traverses the eastern Great Lakes, reducing pollutant dispersion. However, low pollutant carryover from Saturday will lead to high-Good AQI levels. Monday, December 23: As the next low pressure system impacts the Great Lakes, light south-southeasterly winds early in the day will bring pollutants into the Mahoning Valley. Furthermore, a strong morning temperature inversion will trap pollutants near the ground, while increasing moisture will enhance particle production. Therefore, despite stronger winds dispersing pollutants in the afternoon, AQI levels will be low-Moderate. Christmas Eve, light westerly winds will become calm in the late afternoon and evening, leading to pollutant build-up in Youngstown-Warren. In addition, emissions related to the holiday will increase particle levels, keeping AQI levels low-Moderate. Christmas Day and Thursday, as a broad area of surface high pressure settles to the northeast, calm to light southeasterly winds will reduce mixing and dispersion, allowing AQI levels to remain low-Moderate on both days. Friday, easterly winds will strengthen slightly as a low pressure system develops to the west, increasing pollutant dispersion. However, regional pollutant carryover from previous days will keep AQI levels low-Moderate.
