Sunday, December 22: Surface high pressure passing north of Ohio will produce light and variable winds in the central Ohio, hindering dispersion. Additionally, a strong morning temperature inversion will confine pollutants near the ground. However, pollutant carryover from the previous day will be low, resulting in high-Good AQI levels. Monday, December 23: As a weak cold front gradually approaches central Ohio, light southerly morning winds will carry pollutants and moisture into the Columbus region, enhancing particle production. However, winds will strengthen and shift to southwesterly in the afternoon and evening, dispersing pollutants and leading to low-Moderate AQI levels. Christmas Eve, as the weak front moves through the Columbus region, light westerly winds will become calm in the afternoon and evening, leading to pollutant build-up. In addition, emissions related to the holiday will contribute to particle levels. Therefore, AQI levels will be low-Moderate. Christmas Day and Thursday, as a broad area of surface high pressure settles to the northeast of Ohio, calm to light southeasterly winds will reduce mixing and dispersion, keeping AQI levels Moderate on both days. Friday, easterly winds will strengthen as a low pressure system deepens to the west, enhancing mixing, dispersing pollutants, and lowering AQI levels to high-Good.
