Thursday, January 8: Light south-southeasterly winds will transport regional pollutants into Youngstown-Warren. In addition, a ridge of high pressure aloft will limit atmospheric mixing, while an evening inversion confines pollutants near the ground. These conditions will lead to low-Moderate AQI levels. Friday, January 9: Gusty southerly to westerly winds will aid dispersion as a surface low-pressure system moves across the Great Lakes. However, these winds will recirculate regional pollutants and moisture into the Mahoning Valley. Therefore, AQI levels will remain low-Moderate. Saturday, a strong trough of low-pressure aloft over the western Great Lakes will enhance atmospheric mixing. However, calm to light and variable surface winds will inhibit dispersion, while high humidity promotes particle formation. Thus, AQI levels will continue to be low-Moderate. Sunday through Tuesday, as a front departs and surface high pressure develops south of the state, moderate and gusty southerly to southwesterly winds throughout much of the period will disperse pollutants. Additionally, carryover from day to day will be low. Therefore, AQI levels will be Good on all three days.
