Current Conditions at 4 p.m. EDT this Friday afternoon: After seeing mostly cloudy skies this morning, due to a wavy frontal boundary slipping by to the south, the temperature has rebounded into the upper 70’s to low-80’s under mostly sunny skies. The cloud coverage kept PM2.5 into the moderate range this morning, but now that vertical mixing is taking place because of the heating of the surface, PM2.5 is slipping into the good range the reminder of the day along side good ozone. ***Saturday’s Forecast: The sun returns for the 1st half of Saturday with dry conditions before the weather starts to deteriorate Sunday. With a light northeasterly wind due to weak Canadian high pressure to the north, resulting in a fairly clean air mass in place, ozone and PM2.5 should remain in the upper-good range. ***Sunday’s Forecast: A soaking rain is forecasted for Sunday as a slow moving warm front approaches Western PA. With cloudy skies, ozone will be limited to the good range and the higher moisture content of the air mass should allow PM2.5 in remain in the low-moderate range due to lack of mixing. ***Monday’s Forecast: A cold front will slide through early on Monday presenting the chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms overnight Sunday into Monday morning. With the return of some sunshine and winds turning from southerly to northwesterly, ozone should rise to the low-moderate range and PM2.5 should drop into the upper-good range. ***Extended Outlook: High pressure settles overhead allowing another sunny skies with temperatures reaching the upper 70’s. The northwest airflow should help to keep the air mass fairly clean restraining PM2.5 and ozone into the upper-good range. That high pressure system will be short-lived as the progressive jet-stream from the northwest will bring in another low-pressure system and cool front renewing the chance for precipitation Wednesday night into Thursday. Overall air quality will vacillate between low-moderate and upper-good range Tuesday through Thursday.--- VanLenten
