Elevated amounts of fine particle pollution remains in place across much of eastern Minnesota as of this Thursday afternoon, resulting in Yellow (moderate) AQI. While a weak cold front has worked through much of the state, it has struggled to remove the environment that's been favorable to the development of this air pollution, including high humidity, light winds, and mild temperatures. This means a repeat of Yellow AQI across much of eastern Minnesota is most likely for Friday, and that a more robust airmass change will be necessary to bring widespread Green (good) AQI across the state. Fortunately, that will happen Saturday, as a stronger cold front brings breezy northwest winds, cooler temperatures, and drier air. A rapid rebound in temperatures by the start of the new work-week means more snow melt and higher humidity, and therefore the potential for more air pollution across at least portions of Minnesota once again.
