A cold front is sweeping across Minnesota as of this Thursday afternoon, and a secondary cold front will move through Friday morning. While not strong in the sense of big temperature changes, they are producing light snow, and ushering in a cleaner airmass in terms of air pollution. Ahead of the front, moderate concentrations of fine particle pollution exists, while low concentrations exist behind. Moderate concentrations will therefore last longer into the day across eastern Minnesota, and since the AQI is based on a 24 hour average, Yellow (moderate) AQI is forecast for much of eastern Minnesota today, with Green (good) AQI forecast across western Minnesota. As for Friday, Green AQI is expected statewide, though far southeastern Minnesota may approach Yellow. Another low pressure area will pass through the region Saturday into Sunday, leading once again to light snow and a period of southerly winds which could promote elevated concentrations of fine particle pollution across portions of southern Minnesota. However, Green AQI is most likely statewide this weekend. Cleaner and much colder air will be in place by Monday.
