Daily Air Quality Forecast for Grand Beach, Michigan

Northwest Air Quality Region Forecast for Today: November 22, 2024 PM2.5 : Good Weather Forecast Discussion The upper-level low that brought us our first snow of the season is currently over eastern Pennsylvania and is expected to move off the east coast later today. Behind this system is some cold air which is wrapped around the back of the low and will keep us below average temperature wise once again today. Temperatures at 850mb are below zero and should stay that way all day but are forecast to make a modest recovery on Saturday as a weak area of high pressure moves in. As this occurs, a warm front that is associated with an area of low pressure will begin to push into Indiana. The axis of the 500 mb ridge will move across the forecast area quickly over the weekend as the main branch of the upper-level jet starts to flatten across the middle of the US before a shortwave develops late Monday into Tuesday. Overall, it will be a very active pattern with wet and windy conditions on tap. Saturday Mostly cloudy, with a high near 44. West wind 5 to 10 mph. Sunday Partly sunny, with a high near 51. Southerly winds become gusty in the afternoon. Monday A chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 51. Winds becoming west-northwest as the low pressure departs the area. Air Quality model analysis and decision  Fine Particulate: The NOAA 06Z BC has good AQI on Saturday with values creeping up to the moderate range by Sunday. I did notice that the FireWork surface smoke forecast had some very light smoke plumes across Minnesota and Wisconsin this weekend but little to no smoke reaching the forecast area. In addition, the AirNow Fire and Smoke map has fires burning in West Virgina and others along the Gulf Coast and the western US. I would also like to mention that recent rains in the northeast should make a dent in those fires as well. Overall, the forecast does not support local fire activity which combined with the end of fire season, snowpack and plenty of mixing in the boundary layer we should remain in the good category. One caveat is with melting snow we might see a small bump in fine particulate matter levels as trapped aerosols are released early Sunday but should mix out quickly.
