Daily Air Quality Forecast for Dixon, Kentucky

Weather Forecast Discussion A very wavy 500 mb weather pattern for this week; much above normal surface temps today and tomorrow near 80 then normal high temperatures (upper-60’s) for the rest of the week. The 500 mb GFS shows a strong ridge over the southeastern states and a sharp trough over the 4-corner states in the Rockies. A 100-knot jet from the southwest brings showers to the western part of the state today and humidity up the Mississippi Valley. PWAT values of up to 1.7 inches are expected which is a near record for this time of year and areas in Missouri may receive 2-3 times that amount. Winds today and much of tomorrow should be southwesterly Later today a surface low moves up the plains to the UP of Michigan by Tuesday evening. The upper level flow is nearly parallel to the front so its progress through the state will be slow, from early evening in the southwest part of the state to before sunrise Wednesday morning. Most of the precip will fall in the 12 hours before the cold front’s arrival until an hour after the front passes. The cold front doesn’t travel too deeply south so that chances of light showers remain for the rest of the week. Then another trough forms Wednesday in the 4-corner states to nearly repeat the cycle. The southeast ridge has moved just offshore the Carolina Coast and another southwest jet in the plains states. (but not as strong) This trough however continues to dig into the southern Rockies and waits to eject northeastward until late Friday evening. A large surface high Thursday extending over virtually the northern half of the nation will bring us ordinary north winds on Thursday shifting to northeast on Friday. A tropical storm will develop mid-week may approach hurricane status west of Florida, then possibly approach Mississippi late Friday. Air Quality model analysis and decision  Ozone: No more ozone forecasts until spring. Fine Particulate: Gusty winds for today and Tuesday should not carry much particulates due to showers and high humidity. Besides, the models are showing little activity. Passage of the cold front and north to northeast winds will keep particulates low for the remainder of the week.
