Daily Air Quality Forecast for Morganfield, Kentucky

Weather Analysis and Air Quality Forecasting Decisions: Ozone:  An area of low pressure is currently over Iowa this morning with a stationary front stretched to the northeast along the lower Great Lakes. Another disturbance is also riding along the boundary over northern Indiana. A cloud deck is streaming ahead of the boundary over the entire region. With this slow-moving system expect a cloudy day with rain/storms possible all day. Surface temperatures are in the 60’s across southern Indiana this morning. This system has some upper-level support with vorticity maxes across our northern counties as well as a secondary wave to the south with ridging over the southwest US beginning to build behind them. With weak southerly flow at the surface and at 850mb temperatures at this level will be in the 10-12 C range today; dew points at this level also surge to near 10 C as well as the vertical column begins to saturate ahead of the frontal boundary. Surface temperatures are forecast to reach around 75 F for us today with dewpoints in the 60’s as well. Precipitation will start this morning across southern Indiana and diminish later this evening with around 3/4 of an inch total with more possible in areas that get under a thunderstorm. Once this system moves out on Saturday expect much cooler and drier conditions for the weekend with highs in the 60's and northerly winds becoming easterly on Sunday. Flow at 500 mb will be northwesterly as the upper level ridge builds in with 850mb warming very limited until Monday. As we move into Monday and the surface high moves east we will get into a southerly flow with some robust warm air advection allowing max temperatures to reach the low 80's again. Skies should be mostly sunny all weekend and into Monday. Mixing heights will be around 4000ft on Saturday and Sunday so with cooler temperatures and wind speeds between 5-10 mph we could see moderate ozone develop early next week but concerns are very low for the weekend. This is also supported by the NOAA 06Z BC run for max 8 hour ozone over the weekend as well with good AQI forecasted. Finally, the Canadian ozone model also has good AQI as well for the weekend. Fine Particulate:  A review of the NOAA 06Z BC and the Canadian total fine particulate models indicate good AQI over the weekend as Canadian high pressure takes over behind today's system. Fire activity to our north is very limited so impacts from fires is not expected to be impactful for the state but as we switch to a southerly flow on Monday we could have additional contributions to fine particulate levels from fires in eastern Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.
