Daily Air Quality Forecast for Simpsonville, Kentucky

Weather Analysis and Air Quality Forecasting Decisions: Fine Particulate:  This afternoon and evening, mainly dry conditions are expected across the region as the initial cold front and associated rain showers push southeastward out of the area. Temperatures will gradually cool through late afternoon and evening as weak cold advection filters in from the northwest. Some brief clearing is possible behind the front, though any breaks in the cloud cover should be short-lived. Tonight, a secondary shortwave trough will eject from the southern Plains toward the mid-Mississippi Valley, drawing low- to mid-level Gulf moisture northward into the Ohio Valley. A secondary surface low is forecast to track from the Gulf states into east-central Kentucky and the middle Ohio Valley by midday Saturday. This setup will feature overrunning moisture atop a near-surface cool and stable air mass, resulting in widespread rain showers late tonight through Saturday. The highest coverage of precipitation will likely occur east of I-65, though some enhancement farther west is possible Saturday as the left-exit region of the 500 mb jet approaches. Precipitation amounts continue trending downward. Temperatures Saturday will exhibit a pronounced northwest-to-southeast gradient, ranging from upper 40s in the northwest to low 60s in the southeast. Saturday night into Sunday morning, the main upper-level trough axis will drop from the upper Midwest into the Ohio Valley, shifting deeper moisture and rain east of the Appalachians. Sunday will be cool and breezy as cold advection strengthens between the departing surface low and an approaching Plains high. High pressure will settle over the Tennessee Valley by Sunday night, calming winds and allowing temperatures to fall into the low 20s. Quiet weather is anticipated Monday and Tuesday under northwest flow aloft and surface high pressure across the southeast US. Temperatures will gradually moderate early next week as return flow develops around the high. ECMWF guidance depicts the upper trough rotating into the Great Lakes by late Saturday, lowering geopotential heights to near 550 dam and ushering in northwest flow aloft with modest cold air advection. This feature exits eastward late Sunday, with a low-amplitude ridge building over the western U.S., leaving the region under west-northwest flow at 500 mb into Monday. Temperatures at 850 mb will fall below 0°C over the weekend before recovering late Monday. The NOAA 06Z BC fine particulate forecast shows moderate air quality today and Saturday, improving to good Sunday and Monday. Current monitoring trends have been toward moderate AQI all week. The WPC snowpack map indicates no snow cover across Indiana this morning. Regional Forecaster Initials: JW
