Thursday, January 8 and Friday, January 9 are Wood Stove Curtailment Days. Wood stove burning is prohibited unless you are burning seasoned wood in a registered EPA-compliant wood stove with phase two emissions control technology or better. For more information on registering your wood heating device please contact NSAQMD at 530-832-0102. Thursday, January 8 and Friday, January 9: As surface high pressure moves toward the Great Basin, light northeasterly winds will inhibit dispersion each day. Additionally, cold temperatures during the evening and overnight hours will produce inversions, trapping pollutants near the ground. Therefore, AQI levels will be mid-Moderate on both days. Saturday and Sunday, surface high pressure will remain east of the Portola region, which will produce calm to light easterly to northeasterly winds that will allow pollutants to accumulate. Furthermore, cold temperatures each morning will generate inversions, confining pollutants near the ground. These conditions, combined with day to day carryover, will keep AQI levels mid-Moderate on both days. Monday and Tuesday, calm to light easterly winds will persist, limiting dispersion. Additionally, strong morning inversions will reduce low-level mixing, and carryover from the previous days will be high. Therefore, AQI levels will be high-Moderate on both days.
