People with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teens – take any of these steps to reduce your exposure:
Thursday, December 4, and Friday, December 5 are Wood Stove Curtailment Days. Wood stove burning is prohibited unless you are burning seasoned wood in a registered EPA-compliant wood stove with phase two emissions control technology or better. For more information on registering your wood heating device, please contact NSAQMD at 530-832-0102. Thursday, December 4: Decreasing easterly winds will hinder dispersion as a surface high-pressure system weakens to the east. In addition, morning and evening temperature inversions will confine pollutants near the surface, resulting in mid-Moderate AQI levels. Friday, December 5: A ridge of high pressure aloft will continue to limit atmospheric mixing across the northern Sierras. In addition, calm to light westerly winds will hinder dispersion, while regional pile burns contribute to particle levels. Therefore, AQI levels will increase to high-Moderate. Saturday through Tuesday, a surface ridge of high pressure across northern California will keep winds light and variable in Portola through the period. Furthermore, temperature inversions each morning and evening will hinder low-level mixing. In addition, occasional light westerly winds may transport additional smoke from ongoing pile burns into Portola. Therefore, AQI levels will be high-Moderate on all four days.
