January 8 – January 12: As the low-pressure system that brought the latest round of precipitation migrates to the east, high-pressure building over the Pacific will begin to influence conditions. A combination of clear skies and the residual effects of the passing front will make for cold conditions as radiational cooling limits ground level heat retention. The NWS has issued Cold Weather Advisories and Extreme Cold Weather Advisories for coastal and interior locations in the region until 9AM Friday. As high-pressure builds and migrates to the coast, expect a gradual warm up beginning this weekend and into next week. Temperatures will range from the high-30s to the low-60s at the coast and low-30s to the low-60s inland. Ozone levels should remain below State standards, therefore ozone AQIs will remain GOOD. Recent moist conditions will keep PM10 (dust) AQIs in the Salinas Valley at GOOD as well. As high pressure builds and begins influencing weather in the Central Coast, colder conditions will promote woodstove usage in the SLV which, in conjunction with atmospheric stabilization and a reduction in ventilation, could bring PM2.5 (smoke) AQIs into the MODERATE-UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS range.
