August 14 – August 18: Ridging building over the southwest will kick off a slight warming trend starting this weekend; however, a trough generated over the Pacific should limit any significant warming to the Central Coast. Associated with this pressure differential is the reestablishment of an onshore flow pattern that will shift transport winds from southerly to a northwesterly orientation. This should abate some of the smoke impacts from the Timber Fire to the Monterey Peninsula, Santa Cruz and the Bay Area. As of this forecast, smoke impacts (PM2.5) have been generally MODERATE. MBARD expects GOOD-MODERATE AQIs as long as northwesterly flow is maintained and smoke is transported away from high-populated areas. Temperatures will range from the mid-50s to the low-70s at the coast and mid-50s to mid-90s inland. Due to cooler temperatures, ozone production will be at normal levels; therefore, ozone AQIs will remain GOOD. 20 mph wind speeds with 30 mph gusts in the Salinas Valley could bring PM10 AQIs to MODERATE.
