Wednesday, November 20 through Friday, November 22: As a deep trough of low pressure develops off the coast of the northern California, moderate southwesterly winds will develop in Portola each day, increasing pollutant dispersion. Furthermore, rain showers will enhance atmospheric mixing. However, winds will weaken each evening, leading to pollutant accumulation. As a result, AQI levels will be high-Good to low-Moderate on all three days. Saturday, southwesterly winds will weaken throughout the day as surface high pressure builds across the northern Sierra. These conditions will reduce mixing and dispersion, yielding mid-Moderate AQI levels. Sunday, as surface high pressure departs to the northeast, calm to light easterly winds will lead to pollutant build-up in Portola. Additionally, overnight temperatures in the 20s will generate an inversion, inhibiting low-level mixing. Therefore, AQI levels will increase to mid-Moderate. Monday, a deepening upper-level low offshore will aid mixing over northern California. Furthermore, light to moderate southwesterly winds will develop through the afternoon, increasing pollutant dispersion. However, lighter winds in the morning and evening will allow pollutants to accumulate, keeping AQI levels mid-Moderate.
