November 18 - November 22: Monday dawned clear and chilly. The Freeze Watch has been upgraded to Freeze Warning for interior portions of the Central Coast and Frost Advisory for the Santa Cruz coast and Watsonville areas, with temperatures as low as 34 degrees F expected Monday night. Tuesday will be a transition day from dry conditions to an impactful atmospheric river. By Wednesday morning, San Francisco (up to Eureka) will feel this intense storm, with pressure gradients more than twice the threshold of a “bomb cyclone” and enough rain (up to 7”) Wednesday and Thursday to cause flooding. Fortunately, most of us on the Central Coast will be unaware of the intense storm and spared the worst impacts, with rainfall totals closer to 1 inch, and perhaps little to no rain in southern Monterey County. Friday into Saturday morning, the tail end of the atmospheric river will bring another pulse of rain throughout the Central Coast, with up to 2.5” in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Cooler temperatures will keep afternoon ozone levels below State standards and thus air quality for ozone will be GOOD. Breezy conditions and rain bring good ventilation and GOOD PM2.5 (smoke) AQIs. Due to moist conditions, AQIs for PM10 (dust) should be GOOD.
